Elyse

Dinner seems to have flown by, but when I check my phone, I discover we’ve actually been in the restaurant for more than two hours. No one has interrupted us to ask Miles for an autograph, and I find I’m relieved about that fact. I still haven’t really reconciled myself to the fact that I’m on a date with him, and fan interruptions would just make the whole thing more surreal.

Miles pulls my chair out for me, then holds his hand out to help me up. I take it, marveling at how big his hand is compared to mine. It makes sense—the guy probably has a foot on me—but it feels so unusual to be holding hands with anyone, much less Miles McGregor.

“I’m not ready for tonight to end,” he says once we’re outside.

“Neither am I,” I confess softly.

“Come home with me,” he says, his voice husky. “No pressure. We can have a drink and talk, or watch a movie.”

I hesitate for a minute. He’s given me no reason to second-guess him, but I have years of experience informing my decisions.

“Or not,” he says, raising my hand to his lips. “Like I said, no pressure.”

“Come home with me,” I blurt out. I’m going to feel a lot more comfortable in my own place than I will in whatever expensive place he lives in. No one’s ever made me feel like Miles does, and all I want is to extend the fantasy that this is a normal date, and that we can have a normal relationship. Going to his TV-star house isn’t going to help with that.

“Yeah,” he says with a grin. “Happily. I’m parked over here.”

His car is foreign, expensive, and fast. And he takes full advantage of that speed, the car hugging the curves he’s taking quickly and expertly. We arrive at my place ten minutes sooner than it would normally take.

I direct him to the assigned parking spots when we reach my townhouse. He parks and practically sprints around the car to open the door.

“I am actually capable of opening my own doors,” I tease as he offers me his hand.

“Capable, certainly, but why should you when it brings me so much joy?” he says, bringing my hand to his lips and placing a lingering kiss there.

There’s no way we’re in reality right now.

“Elyse,” Miles says gently, and I realize I’ve just been staring at my hand for a few seconds. “Why don’t you show me your place.”

I nod and head towards my apartment. When we get there, I fumble with the key because my hands are shaking so badly. My embarrassment only makes my coordination worse until Miles takes pity on me and pulls the key from my hand. He unlocks the door but lets me open it.

“Come in,” I say. Suddenly, everything in the townhouse looks shabby. I’m sure he’s used to a very different standard of living.

“I’m sorry,” I say, folding up the afghan my grandmother made, which is sitting on the couch. “I wasn’t expecting company.
